JEWISH HERITAGE THEMES
Walking Tours and Visits - Group Bookings |
| |
Many of these walking tours can be supplemented with a visit to make your tour that extra bit special for you. We can arrange for synagogues to be open for a tour or a talk. Depending on the tour you select you might like to visit Sandys Row, Bevis Marks, Fieldgate Street or Nelson Street. Or maybe you might prefer to see the closed cemeteries in east London. Both the Ashkenazi and Sephardi burial societies are happy to work with us to make the arrangements. Another alternative is to complement the Jewish heritage walking tour with a visit to an east London venue not specifically linked to the Jewish community. For example, Wilton's Music Hall, the German Lutheran Church or Denis Severs House. We will be pleased to help you and advise on any donations and entrance charges. |
| |
An East End Village |
|
If you’ve tried our “Old Jewish East End” Tour (or even if you haven’t) why not venture further east to explore some of the lesser known Jewish sights of London?
Walking from Mile End, Stepney Green always comes as a revelation to visitors with its attractive terraced houses and green spaces. Memories of the Jewish community remain with the old age home, Stepney Jewish School, Rothschild Dwellings, the Jewish Anarchist Club, and so much more. |
| |
Mile End and Stepney with Cemeteries |
|
Hidden behind Queen Mary College are the closed Old and the New Sephardi cemeteries. We can arrange for these to be opened up specially for your tour which will include a walk in and around the Mile End Road taking in the wonderfully tranquil Stepney Green.
Also in the area are two closed Ashkenazi cemeteries in Brady Street and Alderney Road. These too, can be opened up on request and provide a wonderful insight into the original Ashkezani community who followed the Sephardi Jews back to London during the resettlement of the mid 17th century. |
| |
Jewish Theatreland |
|
Take a tour of London's Theatreland exploring the connections with Jewish actors, impresarios, writers and producers.
The cast includes Lionel Bart, Lord Delfont, Barbara Streisand, Jonathan Miller, Arnold Wesker and many more. Credits are also due to Lyons for refreshments, Moss Bros for the costumes and Freed for the dance shoes. The tour lasts for around two hours with no interval, ending near Covent Garden |
| |
The City - a Walk of Jewish Firsts |

|
The City is the East End's neighbour and also has a wealth of Jewish stories to tell
Set against the backdrop of The City, the oldest financial centre in the world, this walking tour highlights the stories of Jewish Firsts. Not only the first Jewish community in the Mediaeval City but synagogues and, among others, a Lord Mayor, a Prime Minister, a Baronet, an MP ... and a Eurobond! Many of the Jewish Firsts profiled broke down the barriers of discrimination in Victorian England and their stories bring to life not only the growth of the Jewish Community but also the development of the financial institutions of the Square Mile |
| |
East End Radicals |
|
The East End still evokes memories of radicals and revolutionaries, those men and women who worked ceaselessly to improve the working and living conditions of the predominately Jewish community of the late 19th century into the inter-war years.
You will hear the stories of the Battle of Cable Street, the Sidney Street Siege and see the doss-house that was home temporarily to Stalin and Jack London before the tour ends at Stepney Green, home of Rudolph Rocker, the German gentile who learnt Yiddish and became the champion of the Jewish anarchists. |
| |
Jewish West End |
|
Explore Jewish connections in the heart of London’s West End and learn about the area’s rich social history with its clubs, schools and synagogues.
As you walk through Fitzrovia and Soho where the West End Jewish community worked as teachers, tailors, dressmakers, milliners, retailers and market traders you will visit sites of a Jewish school, a synagogue now converted to a theatre and London’s most famous literary pub run by Jewish landlords. |
| |
Jewish Whitechapel |
|
In and around Commercial Road we can still find reminders of the vibrant Jewish community who lived and worked there.
The streets and buildings evoke memories of the street markets, the medical missions and schools. Fun and leisure too, with the Grand Palais Yiddish theatre and Frumkins, the 'House of Weddings' and you will also visit Cable Street, the site of the battle to stop the fascists but also the home to a brave doctor, Hannah Billig, the Angel of Cable Street. |
| |
Old Jewish East End |
|
The Jewish community may no longer live in Spitalfields but the streets and buildings still evoke memories of the synagogues, schools and soup kitchens. Not forgetting Yiddish theatre and the street markets in and around Petticoat Lane. We also weave in the stories of other immigrant communities of the area, such as the Huguenots and Bengalis. |
| |
An East End Story |
|
Discover the streets where fact has often merged with fiction. From 'The Children of the Ghetto' to 'The People of the Abyss' and 'Chicken Soup', the Jewish community has inspired writers throughout the centuries to the present day. Your guide will include short passages from books by, amongst others, Zangwill, Wesker and Rachel Lichtenstein. |
| |
Women of Worth |
|
Jewish and non-Jewish women made an impact on the Jewish community in the East End. Sites visited include those associated with Alice Model and her maternity hospital, Miriam Moses and her youth work, the philanthropy of the Rothschild ladies and the actresses of the Yiddish theatre. |
| |
At Home with the Rothschilds |
|
The Rothschilds made their fortune in the City but soon moved to palatial mansions in Mayfair and Piccadilly where they lived in splendour that only riches such as theirs could provide.
This tour invites you to discover the Rothschilds at home, their families, parties and 'adoration dinners'. En route you will also 'meet' their neighbours too, after all, they included the Duke of Wellington and Disraeli. |
| |
Jewish Mayfair |
|
Our tour highlights the stories of those who spearheaded the move west to Mayfair beginning with Montefiore and the Rothschilds. Many followed them including politicians Disraeli and Hore-Belisha, members of the Marlborough House set such as Sir Ernest Cassels, and Wolf Barnato, one of the Bentley Boys. |
| |
Jewish Hampstead |
|
The Jewish community moved northwards, Hampstead became a centre for those in intellectual and artistic circles.
Discover the streets of this leafy suburb and hear the stories of those refugees who did not go east but chose to settle in NW3, including Sigmund Freud and Erno Goldfinger. |
