For many people the East End is the Jewish East End and at Go East London we have devised tours for you to discover the memories of the Jewish community. Not just the buildings such as schools, Synagogues and tenements but reminders of personalites too, artists, writers and the wealthy philanthropists.

Whether you visit by foot or by coach we can assure you that the memories will flood back! For an idea of the areas we cover take a look at our tours Old Jewish East End, Jewish Mile End and Stepney and An East End Village - Historic Stepney Green.

Or you could have a tailor-made tour of your own choice.

An East End Village
This walk will come as a revelation to you. Just a few minutes away from the bustling Mile End Road, once London’s ‘Millionaires’ Row’, we find a tranquil oasis with an ancient village church, a farm, a 17th century merchant’s house, several 18th century houses built for sea captains and some delightful alms houses.

Hear about past residents such as a theatrical producer, a playwright, a trade union organiser, a scout leader and a famous philanthropist. Finish at a pub which has been a theatre and a Welsh Chapel.

Jewish Mile End and Stepney
If you’ve tried our “Old Jewish East End” Tour (or even if you haven’t) why not venture further east to explore some of the lesser known Jewish sights of London?

Hidden behind Queen Mary College we’ll view an old Sephardi cemetery and it may be possible to visit an even older burial ground which is rarely open to view.

After this we will head for tranquil Stepney Green which always comes as a revelation to visitors with its attractive terraced houses and green spaces.

Memories of the Jewish community remain with the old Stepney Jewish School, a tenement which housed a well known radical leader and a Victorian synagogue building.

NEW! The City - a Walk of Jewish Firsts
The City is the East End's neighbour and also has a wealth of Jewish stories to tell

Set against the backdrop of The City, the oldest financial centre in the world, this walking tour highlights the stories of Jewish Firsts. Not only the first Jewish community in the Mediaeval City but synagogues and, among others, a Lord Mayor, a Prime Minister, a Baronet, an MP ... and a Eurobond! Many of the Jewish Firsts profiled broke down the barriers of discrimination in Victorian England and their stories bring to life not only the growth of the Jewish Community but also the development of the financial institutions of the Square Mile
NEW! East End Radicals
The East End still evokes memories of radicals and revolutionaries, those men and women who worked ceaselessly to improve the working and living conditions of the predominately Jewish community of the late 19th century into the inter-war years.

You will hear the stories of the Battle of Cable Street, the Sidney Street Siege and see the doss-house that was home temporarily to Stalin and Jack London before the tour ends at Stepney Green, home of Rudolph Rocker, the German gentile who learnt Yiddish and became the champion of the Jewish anarchists.
NEW! Jewish West End
This tour is outside the East End but we cannot leave it out ... it is proving one of the most popular!

Explore Jewish connections in the heart of London’s West End and learn about the area’s rich social history with its clubs, schools and synagogues. As you walk through Fitzrovia and Soho where the West End Jewish community worked as teachers, tailors, dressmakers, milliners, retailers and market traders you will visit sites of a Jewish school, a synagogue now converted to a theatre and London’s most famous literary pub run by Jewish landlords.
NEW! Jewish Whitechapel
In and around Commercial Road we can still find reminders of the vibrant Jewish community who lived and worked there.

The streets and buildings evoke memories of the street markets, the medical missions and schools. Fun and leisure  too, with the Grand Palais Yiddish theatre and Frumkins, the  'House of Weddings'  and  you will also visit Cable Street, the site of the battle to stop the fascists but also the home to a brave doctor, Hannah Billig,  the Angel of Cable Street.
Old Jewish East End
The history of the Jews in London dates back to 1066 and is a story of persecution, exile, re-establishment and renaissance.

Starting on the edge of the City of London we move eastwards to the historic area of Spitalfields and Whitechapel.

Once the centres of London’s Jewish community buildings still evoke memories of the past –  a famous street market, an old soup kitchen,  synagogues, homes of famous Jewish personalities and some of the  best preserved Georgian domestic architecture in London.

Hear about the artists, writers, academics, tailors and market traders who made this area their home.
